Luke’s Story
Luke’s life started like any other child’s—born healthy, arriving right on his due date. His parents imagined a future filled with first words, first steps, and endless adventures. But around his first birthday, everything changed. Luke began to regress. Words he had learned disappeared, his energy faded, and progress slowed. By age two, his parents knew something was wrong.
After months of uncertainty, Luke was referred to the Children’s Hospital, where a scope confirmed the diagnosis: Very Early Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease (VEO-IBD)—a rare and severe condition that causes chronic inflammation anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract. For a child under six, this disease is life-altering. It impacts growth, development, and everyday life in ways most of us can’t imagine.
Luke began treatment immediately. His first biologic medication worked for a while, but his body stopped responding. Today, he receives infusions every four weeks, spending 15–20 days a year at the hospital for treatments, scopes, and checkups. Despite living with an invisible illness, Luke often looks like any other kid—but his reality is different. He masks discomfort and faces challenges most children never will.
Through it all, the Children’s Hospital has been Luke’s lifeline. It’s not just a place for care—it’s a partner in his journey. From Child Life specialists like Melanie, to bravery beads, Ollie the clown, and the Family Resource Centre, the hospital provides comfort, consistency, and hope. Luke even participated in a groundbreaking research study, helping pave the way for better treatments for kids like him.
Luke is more than his diagnosis. He loves cars, Formula 1 racing, is a fierce UNO player, and enjoys outdoor adventures. He dreams big—and with your help, those dreams can stay alive.
