Your Support Matters!
When Martha’s stomach started causing her issues in December 2014, she tried to rev up her regular routine, incorporating healthier foods into the mix. But as chia seeds failed to alleviate her symptoms, she was referred to London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) for a colonoscopy.
Significant blockage prevented physicians from completing the procedure, and Martha was admitted to the hospital. After undergoing surgery to remove the mass and send it for biopsy, results revealed she had stage three colon cancer. Martha was immediately referred to LHSC’s oncology department.
In addition to her out-patient treatments, oncologist Dr. Stephen Welch invited Martha to join a research trial comparing outcomes between patients who received three versus six months of chemotherapy, as well as another trial to determine the risk of her cancer coming back. Thanks to vital support from donors, these types of studies provide researchers at LHSC with the information needed to enhance patient care in our community and beyond.
“My experience at LHSC was absolutely amazing,” Martha says.
With her cancer now in remission, Martha is enjoying time with her family in her brand-new role as grandma.
